About Bo-Bing

The Dice Game for Mooncakes (Bo-Bing) on Mid-Autumn Festival
is a traditional folk cultural event in Kinmen,
and has been officially registered as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Commonly known as “Bo-Bing”, the game is played by rolling dice and is a unique Mid-Autumn folk activity popular in the Southern Fujian region. Legend has it that Bo-Bing originated with General Hong Xu, a commander under Zheng Chenggong(Koxinga), who was born in Hongmen Port (later Houfeng Port) in Kinmen. During Zheng’s campaign against Nanjing, in order to maintain the morale of troops left behind in Xiamen and ease their homesickness, he devised the dice game of Bo-Bing, played during Mid-Autumn Festival with mooncakes as prizes. The game later spread throughout Xiamen, Quanzhou, Kinmen, becoming a festive cultural activity associated with the Mid-Autumn celebration. The Bo-Bing tradition has been passed down for more than 300 years. It once disappeared during Kinmen’s military administration period, but in order to preserve this folk tradition and promote tourism, the Kinmen County Government has revived and continued hosting the annual “Mid-Autumn Bo-Bing Festival.” The event has also been recognized by the Taiwan Tourism Administration as a National-Level Event in the Taiwan Tourism Calendar.
